Seffner's history can be traced back to before 1842, making it one of Hillsborough County's earliest communities. Just southeast of Lake Thonotosassa and consisting of the present-day communities of Seffner and Dover, the area was originally known as Simmon's Hammock, after the Reverend Daniel Simmon who migrated from Georgia in 1829 to establish a Baptist mission near the lake. The building of Henry Plant's South Florida Railroad in 1883 made "boom towns" of many of the communities along its route through Hillsborough County, including Seffner and Mango, although Mango was originally homesteaded as early as 1849, over thirty years before the appearance of the first railroad tracks.
